The Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) is set to usher in the National Credit Framework (NCrF) starting the 2024-25 academic session, initially targeting classes VI, IX, and XI. This framework, which aims to revolutionize the education system, will eventually extend to classes X and XII by the 2025-26 academic cycle, with students' board exam marksheets reflecting both their grades and total credits earned.

Under the NCrF, students must accumulate a minimum of 40 credits per subject within an academic year, with 1200 Notional Learning Hours (NLH) allocated annually. Of these NLHs, approximately 950-960 hours will be devoted to classroom instruction, while the remainder will be reserved for independent activities, projects, or enrichment pursuits. Each student will possess a unique APAAR ID, allowing them to track and store their credits in the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) linked to their DigiLocker.

Initially, the NCrF rollout will serve as an educational primer for schools, paving the way for comprehensive adoption in subsequent academic cycles. By the 2025-26 academic year, credits will be integrated into board exam marksheets, signifying a significant shift towards credit-based assessment.

While the NCrF promises flexibility and autonomy for students in selecting subjects and activities aligned with their interests and career aspirations, its effective implementation hinges largely on teacher readiness to embrace innovative teaching methodologies. Teachers will play a pivotal role in facilitating experiential learning opportunities and guiding students through the transition towards a more holistic educational approach.

While the NCrF marks a paradigm shift towards a more dynamic and inclusive education system, successful execution will necessitate concerted efforts from all stakeholders, including educators, students, and parents, to navigate the challenges and maximize the potential benefits of this transformative framework.
